Mr. Raley had a general store in St. Inigoes, Md. At present, the dates are not known, except for the 1930-1934 time frame of these invoices. Most of his wholesalers were in Baltimore and most of his freight came via steamer landing at Grayson's Wharf. Approximately 500 invoices were on one spindle and crammed in a Hollinger correspondence box for years, which did them no good at all. It was interesting to see how the spindling helped to destroy the originals--besides the hole in the paper, the edges caught one another and tore in strange ways. The vast majority of the invoices were from April to December 1930, with a handful from 1933 and 1934. Invoices from meat packers and general grocers appeared most frequently on the spindle, but hardware and farm supplies were frequent also. Dairy products and eggs were often supplied by the Baroniak Dairy, a local operation. At least one example of each company's invoice was retained. Photocopies were made of all the invoices and these copies should be used by patrons--the originals are extremely fragile.Collection
