Leather covered board book 16 5/8"h x 10 5/8"w x 3 1/2"d. The spine has 4 ridges and a title panel "State & County Tax Book for 1846." There are 2" high pieces of additional leather at the top and bottom of the spine. The front cover is completely disconnected from the spine and text block. There are 2" high pieces of leather on the top and bottom. 7 1/2" from the bottom is a black panel 2 3/8"h by 4 1/8"w with text "STATE." A Greek key and running wave designs are stamped in black on the outer edges of the cover. Handwritten below the panel is "1846," "184" and a black blob. The inside cover is faded teal, medium blue and rust watermark. The text block is 16 1/4"h x 10 1/2"w x 2 1/8"d. The paper is heavy cream with black printing. The paper has become brittle over time and has suffered many tears and corner breaks. The first two pages are completely free from the spine and have been supported on board and put in mylar sleeves. The entries are arranged by Election District and then roughly alphabetical by the name of the taxpayer. Pp. 1-136 were for 1846 (Election Districts 1-4) and pp. 1-145 were for 1848 (Election Districts 1-5). The data for each taxpayer covered two pages as the book lay open. The columns were Name [of taxpayer], Land [often name of tract], Acres, Value, Slaves under 14, Value, Males [slaves] 14-45, Value, Males over 45, Value, Females 14-36, Value, Females over 36, Value, Stock in Trade, Value, Public Securities, Value, stock, Value, Private Securities, Value, Livestock, Value, Furniture, Value, Plate and its Value, Watches and their Value, Other Property and its Value, Total. At the end of the second set of pages, there are many dozen blank pages. The book was designed to be turned over and upside down to enter the same information for a county assessment. The cover for this mode of the book looked just like its opposite number except the panel said "COUNTY" and the handwritten entry said "1846" and "Co. tax 1849." The information gathered was the same. In 1846 there were 5 Election Districts and in 1849 there were also 5 Election Districts. I cannot account for the discrepancy between the numbers of Election Districts in 1846. The spine is in two pieces and completely disengaged from the State cover. It is attached to the County cover, but the pieces of the spine flop alarmingly. Between this problem and the brittle pages, this book should not be handled.
