Steamboat Three RiversEntry/Object ID
1995.001.1665Description
Black and white image 6 7/8"h x 9 7/8"w on 8"h x 10"w paper of the steamboat Three Rivers leaving a wharf. The background was hazy. The ship appeared to have three decks. The driving wheel was two-thirds of the way to the stern. There was a huge stack, presumably directly over the powerplant, that was belching black smoke. Lifeboats hung in davits amidships. There were several people on all the decks watching the photographer. The name of the steamer was on a signboard on the rail on the lower deck. This ship may have used a screw for propulsion because there is not enough room for a wheel. The ship flew several flags. There was a public area with large windows on the second deck under the bridge. The cargo opening was just forward of the stack on the lower deck. In the background is a large factory or warehouse with a watertower on top. The original photo was taken from a distance and this reproduction is grainy, so it is difficult to make out detail.
