Description

Stuart B. Bennett was the cashier at the County Trust Company and was also a notary. This piece of equipment was what he used to emboss documents he notarized. The seal was 1 5/8" in diameter. Text= "Stuart B. Bennett St. Mary's Co., Md." around the outside edge and "Notary Public" in the center. The heavy handle had a rotating top half that Mr. Bennett pressed hard when embossing a document. The tool seemed specifically designed not to sit flat on a desk, but had to be held in the hand. The silver coating was peeling off in some spots.
