This booklet was published by the Maryland Historical Society. The cover title is "A sketch of the life of Benjamin Banneker; from notes taken in 1836 [by Mrs. Martha Ellicott Tyson] read by J. Saurin Norris before the Maryland Historical Society October 5, 1854." An embossed stamp is in the lower right corner of the cover. Part of the cover is gone, but the remaining text of the stamp is "A. Hyatt Porto Bello Maryland" Mr. Hyatt was Clara Hyatt Coad's first husband. Glued to the inside front cover, verso of the title page, and inside back cover is an article about Benjamin Banneker as an astronomer. There is also an announcement of the sale of a free Negro woman, apparently apprehended as a vagrant and therefore liable for sale. A paragraph of explanation on the verso of the title page said Mrs. Tyson descended from the Ellicotts of Ellicotts' Mills, patrons of Banneker's, and had Banneker's papers in her possession. The article on Banneker is eighteen pages long.Collection
