The Beacon had a recurring column called Remembrance of Events Past ... 40 Years Ago This Week. This series is for the year 1945, the last year of the war. It highlights events in the European and Pacific theaters, news of individual county soldiers, and other county events. This group of manuscripts is by Jim Ogden, but Mr. Beitzell had an original typed copy and a carbon for each column. I can only surmise that Beitzell helped in the preparation of the material before he died. I quote from the opening paragraph that was at the head of each column in 1985:
"1945, the fifth year of the United States' participation in World War II, brought the end of that cataclysmic struggle in both Europe and the Pacific Theater. 1945 thus became a pivotal year in terms of both war and peace.
This weekly column will highlight some of the happenings of that year -- more than a generation ago -- as reported in local and metropolitan newspapers and as described in histories and other narratives about the time. For those who lived in that tumultuous year, the purpose is to call to remembrance things past; for those too young to remember, to stimulate interest and perhaps further inquiry into events which have affected their world and their lives."
This folder contains the columns for the week of September 15-21, 1945 through the week of December 29-31, 1945, for a total of 16 columns.Collection
