This record is for the scanned version of the Benjamin Tippett Survey Book A. Some of the pages are damaged and some are un-numbered, so the references are to a scan, if that is all there is, or a page number when one is present. Each scan shows two pages, so a reference may be to scan 46A, for the left page, and scan 46B for the right page. There is a placard at the end of the book discussing its various versions. This book is very closely written and is fairly neat. Mr. Tippett was someone who understood what he was about, paid attention to his tools, paid attention to detail, and carefully recorded his work. He had strong opinions about the quality of some previous surveys and the greed of some land holders. There are several drawings in the book, including several large ones that were carefully folded into the book. Over half of the entries are copies of older surveys and deeds, some of which Mr. Tippett updated in this text, but there are also references to updates in Book B. Most of the book is quite legible. There is ink bleed through on most pages, but it is not too difficult to handle. There are hundreds of names in the book. Some are difficult, so there may be errors in transcription. As of March 2026, the names added to this record are not in alphabetical order. Hopefully, CatalogIt will respond to our request to fix that. Cover Not scanned Scan 1A Cover p. 2 is bright white, with no text. Scan 1B Header: Surveying Record kept by Benj. Tippett. The remainder of the page explains some of the tools he used before and after October 1848 and how they would influence the surveys. Scan 2A Text noting that Governor Lyons, on November 3, 1854, had declared November 25th a day of Thanksgiving. There were several more words that were scribbled over into illegibility. Scan 2B At the top of the page was a drawing and six lines of text explaining his method of identifying certain watercourse features. Then were two lines dividing the page. In the lower part, Tippett made two columns with a date in one and an occurrence in another. Beginning in October 1836, he listed deaths and marriages of people important to him. Tippett's own death date, March 13, 1876, was added at the bottom by his brother. Scan 3A More occurrences, including the theft of his watch. Scan 3B More occurrences. The top left entry was scribbled out. There was a heart-felt remembrance of Mary Bean in the center of the page. A November 1856 entry lists the newly elected officials. Scan 4A The index begins. At the top of each page, Tippett explained abbreviations he used. This page, with two columns, was for A and B for both personal and property names with page numbers. Some of the numbers are quite faint. Tippett included death dates for some people. Bleed through begins here. There is a rectangular loss in the lower right corner of the page, possibly deliberate. Scan 4B In the top third of the page, Tippett explained how to use measuring chains. The rest of the page is devoted to entries under C. The page has some small losses on the lower right because it had come loose from the spine. Scan 5A Index for A and B. At the very bottom of the B column, there is a See reference to another part of the Index. Scan 5B The top two-thirds of the page is for two columns of B; the bottom third has a few C entries. Scan 6A There is a single column of W entries. Scan 6B One column for C, one for D. Scan 7A Two incomplete columns for F. Scan 7B One partial column for E and one for F. At the bottom of the E column, probably written at a later time, it says "Electrical Attraction, p. 127, 129." Scan 8A Left column for H, right column for G. Scan 8B Left column for G, right column for H. Scan 9A More occurrences. Scan 9B Index for I and J on the left, K on the right. Scan 10A The left column for M, the right column had a single L entry. There was a large patch of black mold down the center of the image that has caused losses on the next scan. Scan 10B Left column for L, right column for M.
