Tablecloth from the floating theaterEntry/Object ID
2008.010.0001Description
Tablecloth given to J. Johnson Payne as a prize or premium on the floating theater when it visited Leonardtown. The cloth, meant to be a card table cloth, is cotton with a very slightly crinkled finish and a buff background. It has a machine stitched rolled hem. The colors of the pattern are very bright. Each corner has a 1" dark orange square. Between the squares are orange motifs that look like bridge trusses. These motifs are separated from each other by dull green or dull brown isosceles triangles that are 3/4" on the short sides and 2 1/4" on the long side. The point formed by the short sides faces the outside edge of the cloth. Each corner of the cloth inside the border has green and yellow leaves scrolling up to dull red and yellow petals below a two tone orange flower cup. An orange stem of yellow buds rises from behind the flower. Two fuschia flowers with vines and leaves, one above and one to the side of the flower cup, are part of this motif. Royal blue and orange scrolls complete the motif which is approximately 14 1/2" wide and 12" deep. Between each corner is a diamond shape created by 1 1/2" bands of ochre enclosing a royal blue diamond with a deep orange center. This motif is surmounted by an orange and yellow flower. The motif is 7 3/4" wide and 7 1/4" deep. In the center of the cloth is a 3/16" deep royal scalloped circle of about 7 3/4" diameter. Next is a 1/4" buff space. Inside that is a 6 1/2" diameter deep royal circle with a deep orange 1 3/4" starburst flower outlined in buff in its center. There are eight 1 5/8" buff diamonds scattered evenly around the circle with 7/8" blue diamonds inside them. There are four buff double flower stalks and many small buff dots at the edge of the blue circle to complete the motif.Collection
