Description

Scan of a ten dollar bill issued by the First National Bank of Leonardtown as part of the 1929 series. Beginning in 1864, a local bank could arrange to buy national currency by bonding itself for the amount of currency purchased. This system continued until 1935. The First National Bank's charter number was 6606. The number appears in several places on the bill in both gold and black ink. The Treasurer of the United States and the Register of the treasury both signed the bill above Hamilton's portrait and L. J Sterling, bank cashier and George W. Joy, bank president, signed below the portrait. The bill was protected in a heavy mylar sleeve and authenticated by PMG (Paper Money Guaranty) which said there are about 55 uncirculated bills known.
