Description

3 1/2"h x 3 3/8"w black and white photo of Teresa Fenwick's sampler that she made in 1802. The photo did not show the entire embroidery, but focused on the text in the lower left corner. Mr. Fenwick provided a transcription: [at the top, but not shown] "June 23, 1802 St. Mary's County in Maryland Glory in the cross of Jesus Christ when you see this, pray for me" [then came the ABCs] "Teresa Fenwick is my name and with my needle I done the same that every one that please may see the care my parents took of me after I am dead and all my bones lay rotten I leave them this to look upon for fear I should be forgotten" A closeup photo of some of the text was also taken and shares the sleeve. As of 1956, the sampler was held by Mrs. Aloysius King. ********************************** Text on verso: none, but on accompanying sheet "Tradition tell [sic] us that Teresa was nine years old when she executed this beautiful job. She was a dau. of Francis & Margaret Fenwick, she married Lewis Fenwick of Benjamin & Jane Fenwick on Feb. 14, 1814 and had children Francis Aloysius, John Felix and Jane Margaret. After the death of Lewis, Teresa married John Simms on Jan. 24, 1825."
