Description

There are two winter editions of the The Plains Community and one summer edition, both for 1986. The winter issue discusses a story about "Lincolns Slap" which tells folklore about the Plains Plantation, specifically the story of Colonel Sothoron escaping to Canada after shooting a Union lieutenant who tried to recruit the enslaved people working on the plantation. His eldest daughter Mary Elizabeth went to the White House to beg for his pardon where she was slapped across the face by President Lincoln after falling into a hysteria. The issue also covers the community monitoring fund to protect their water sources, update on development of the community pool, mosquito infestations, and community wish lists. The summer issue announces plans for the Sothoron family to restore the colonial graveyard located on the Plains Plantation property. There are also announcements for the beaches opening after insurance disputes, funding for the community pool, mosquito control, and summer camp registration.
