Scope and Content

1 sheet ; 7 3/16" x 9 1/4" This is a trader's license issued for the state of Maryland by the Clerk of the Circuit Court for St. Mary's County. The license cost $12 for 12 months. The actual fee was $12.50, with the $.50 for the clerk. This license entitled G. Fred Maddox to trade in the county "goods, wares, and merchandise" not to exceed $1,000 with the exception of "spirituous or fermented liquors" at his store Kathleen. An odd name for a store. Apparently the first of May was renewal day for these licenses because it was printed on the form. James T. Blakistone was the clerk at the time. The comptroller's embossed stamp is visible if the document is held in your hand, but is difficult to see if the piece is lying on the table.
