This is a trader's license issued for the state of Maryland by the Clerk of the Circuit Court for St. Mary's County. The license cost $12 for 12 months. The actual fee was $12.85, with the $.50 for the clerk and $.35 for the sheriff. This license entitled George I. Obediah and William A. Nelson, trading as George I. Nelson & Co.to trade in the county "goods, chattels, wares, or merchandise" not to exceed $1,000 with the exception of "spirituous or fermented liquors" at their store in Mount Pleasant. Apparently the first of May was renewal day for these licenses because it was printed on the form. J. Frank Ford was the clerk at the time. The comptroller's embossed stamp is visible if the document is held in your hand, but is difficult to see if the piece is lying on the table.Collection
