This is a trader's license issued for the state of Maryland by the Clerk of the Circuit Court for St. Mary's County. The license cost $12 for 12 months. The actual fee was $12.85, with the $.50 for the clerk and $.35 for the sheriff. This license entitled George I. Obediah and William A. Nelson, trading as George I. Nelson & Co.to trade in the county "goods, chattels, wares, or merchandise" not to exceed $1,000 with the exception of "spirituous or fermented liquors" at their store in Mount Pleasant. The text of the license is a little different, but the meaning is the same. J. Frank Ford was the clerk at the time. The comptroller's embossed stamp is visible if the document is held in your hand, but is difficult to see if the piece is lying on the table. There is a second embossed circle near the list of fees, but it is even less visible.Collection
