This is a trader's license issued for the state of Maryland by the Clerk of the Circuit Court for St. Mary's County. The license cost $18 for 12 months. The actual fee was $18.85, with $.50 and for the clerk and $.35 for the sheriff. This license entitled Zephaniah Nelson to trade in the county "spirituous or fermented liquors or lager beer" with stock not to exceed $500 and to be sold in quantities not less than a pint, i.e., he couldn't run a bar and sell individual drinks, at his store at Mount Pleasant. The font and decoration on this license was a little different from the license for general merchandise. Apparently the first of May was renewal day for these licenses because it was printed on the form. John A. Camalier was the clerk at the time. The comptroller's embossed stamp is visible if the document is held in your hand, but is difficult to see if the piece is lying on the table. A second embossed circle was around the area of the printed fee.Collection
