This is a trader's license issued for the state of Maryland by the Clerk of the Circuit Court for St. Mary's County. The license cost $18 for 12 months. The actual fee was $18.85, with the $.50 and for the clerk and $.35 for the sheriff. This license entitled George I. Obediah and William A. Nelson to trade in the county "spirituous or fermented liquors or lager beer" with stock not to exceed $500 and to be sold in quantities not less than a pint, i.e., they couldn't run a bar and sell individual drinks, at their store at Mount Pleasant. J. Frank Ford was the clerk at the time. The comptroller's embossed stamp is visible if the document is held in your hand, but is difficult to see if the piece is lying on the table. A second embossed circle was around the area of the printed fee.Collection
