Description

This is a transcript to an interview Andrew Philip Bove did with Dana Somerville about her time at Flat Tops. As is customary at this point Andrew asked Dana about when she lived in the Flat Tops. He then asks her about the neighborhood and how did it look at the time. Dana says that at time she was there it wasn't as bad as it was near the end. Some of the apartments were run down or boarded up but a number still looked lively. There was still flowers in the neighborhood and it also had some cherry trees that would blossom. Andrew then asks her to go into more detail about what she meant by rundown. She says some apartments had a lot of cars out front, paint was peeling off apartments and some windows were cracked/broken. He asked her the landscape in the Flat Tops and she brought up seeing a lot of trees, nice or starting to break down sidewalks and broken down cars. Mr. Bove inquired about where she and her family went shopping to which she mentions a few local grocery stores etc. Andrew was curious how much influence the Navy had around the late 80s into the early 90s. Dana said not as much as he might figure as most kids didn't family working on base. He asked her if there was any experiences that left a lasting impact and Dana brought up a time where a drunk man punched a hole in a wall that let them see into the man's apartment. Andrew ends the interview asking her what is one thing she wants people to remember about the Flat Tops. Dana answers that it's the people that should be remembered and not the buildings as buildings are just buildings.
