2023.006.0006Description
This is transcript of an interview Andrew Philip Bove did with Douglas Medley of his experiences at Flat Tops. Like before Andrew starts the interview with asking Douglas when did he live in the Flat Tops. Mr. Medley answers that he was born in 1944 and that was when his parents brought him home to the first unit they lived in. He recalls it was a 2 bedroom unit and he was the 3rd child. His parents knew they had to expand and soon after moved to their 2nd unit which had 3 bedrooms. Mr. Medley says his family lived there until 1957 when his father was able to buy a home in Patuxent Park. When Douglas got married he decided to move back to the Flat Tops and that home became the 3rd unit he lived in. As with previous interviewed individuals he too says that Flat Tops was a place where everyone knew each other and you didn't have to lock your doors. As a kid he played in the woods and like some of the other neighborhood kids, would just run in a cloud of DDT after a mosquito truck came through.
Andrew asks Douglas about the transition between the government ownership and then private ownership of Flat Tops. He mentions again that he left in 1957 and it was between then and when he moved back in with his wife that the ownership changed. Mr. Medley mentions how when the government owned Flat Tops that it was well maintained but by the time he moved back in that the new owners let things slide a bit. Douglas was asked as an adult where he would hang out and he brings up the firehouse. By the end of the interview Douglas says he hopes that there is another get-together for previous residents.
