This group of materials includes many photocopies of documents held by Dr. Virts. The Society will be an alternate location for this material.
Photocopy of two pages from "Tidewater Maryland" about Thomas Truman who came to Maryland in 1652 and lived at Trent Hall in what was then Calvert County. He was a fierce soldier and earned many land grants from a grateful Lord Baltimore. He went too far during one battle and slaughtered many Indians, for which Baltimore tried him for treason. The General Assembly refused to find against him, so he was allowed to retire to Trent Hall. He never married, so all descendants are from his brothers Nathaniel and James.
Photocopy of a page from "A Biographical History of the Maryland Legislature" re John DeButts, a member of the General Assembly in the 1770s and 1780s. He died in 1796 possessed of 40 odd slaves and more than 4,000 acres of land in St. Mary's County, plus land in Virginia and Ireland.
Photocopy of two pages from "Chronicles of St. Mary's" of Summer 1991 that were part of a transcript of a manuscript about the history of four Episcopal parishes in St. Mary's County, including a few paragraphs about Reverend Laurence DeButts. He was Rector in St. Mary's County in the 1730s-1752. His death allowed the creation of St. Andrew's Parish in the central area of the county.Collection
