2014.018.0039Description
10"h x 8"w black and white photo of the front of the Tulip monument and plaque on the ground in front of it before the space was cleaned up for the centennial service. The monument is about 7' high and about 2' thick. The stone sits on a large flat pedestal. On the front there is an incised eagle with vertically rampant wings, the head facing left, and feathered feet clinging to a fasces that did not include an axe. Text: "In memory of those who perished in the explosion of the U.S.S. Tulip November 11, 1864" The shield shaped plaque on the ground was attached to a square stone. The plaque said, "The Tulip Disaster" on an applique of metal above a naval anchor. There is text below that, but it is much too small to read. The weeds were a little tall, so they must have been trimmed for the ceremony.
