Turkey for the President, 1960Entry/Object ID
1988.001.0057Description
This is an 8"h x 10"w black and white photo of the presentation of a turkey and oysters from Saint Mary's County to President and Mrs. Eisenhower on December 20, 1960 at the White House. Homer Gruenther accepted the bird on behalf of the President. The bird is standing on top of a large crate, his traveling container. The bird had to suffer the indignity of a large hat on its head and a serape with glitter. There is one #10 can of Potomac View oysters in front of the turkey. A commercially produced sign on the front of the crate says "Mr. St. Mary's County IV for Pres. and Mrs. Eisenhower Merry Xmas from the People of St. Mary's Co. Md. 1960 Ted Barker [in small letters in the lower right corner]" The group in the photo includes L-R: Dorothy Dunn, an unidentified young woman, T. Webster Bell, Mrs. George Thompson, Homer Gruenther, Buck Briscoe, and Mr. George Thompson, who raised the turkey. The group is on a porch of the White House. An attempt was made to three-hole punch the photo for inclusion in a notebook.
