Scope and Content

1 folder ; A. 21 3/8"h x 17 3/4"w survey of Part of Culpeper in the 8th Election District. The north corner of the property is at the intersection of St. Andrew's Church Road and MD Route 235, with the railroad right of way along the same edge as MD Route 235. The southern boundary is largely the Rolling Road. George J. Hannan bought the property in February 1945, but I believe the property lines were challenged by William L. Lantz. This survey was done by Lewis H. Steffens of Bryantown, MD on March 9, 1945 to determine the dividing line between Wm L. Lantz' land and George J. Hannan's land. A chart near the dividing line explains the changes in declination since the surveys of Hatch Turner in 1836 and by George B. Dent in 1903. Mr. Steffens explained all the changes in declination again in the text in the lower right corner of the survey. Usually somewhere on the document is a +- estimate of the acreage, but there is nothing here. This is the land presently [2018] occupied by the First Colony Shopping Center. B. 22"h x 18"w survey of part of Culpeper by George W. Joy, Jr. who produced this drawing dated April 20, 1945. This drawing shows the property line between William Lantz and George Hannan as decided by the previous survey. Several owners of adjoining properties were identified; they are different from the previous survey. In the lower right corner is a list of declination changes since the earlier surveys beginning in 1836. Near the bottom edge of the drawing, there is reference to "T. B. Road," which is unknown to me. Mr. Joy determined there were 237 + acres in the tract. It is a confusing shape.
