This sepia-tone studio portrait was printed on paper that was applied to heavy brown board with gilt edges. This young man had a high white collar nearly covered by a high collared dark garment with a diagonal front closing. No buttons or other fasteners were visible. There was a cord around his neck that was tucked into his garment . A simple tied sash was just barely visible at the bottom of the photo. He had thinning, probably light brown hair, a broad forehead and a thin mouth. His hair covered the tops of his ears. His body was squared to the camera, but his head was turned slightly to his left and he gazed in that direction. In the brown band of board below the photo on the left corner in gold script is "C. M. Bell." On the right corner is printed in gold letters "Washington, D.C."
