Elvare Smith Gaskin's oral history interview on January 28, 1997. She was born shortly after her father died. She was raised by her grandparents in the county, but sometimes visited her mother in Baltimore during the summer. Her grandparents worked in truck gardens, shucked oysters, and worked in the tourist hotels. Her grandmother was a midwife and generally helped other families with illness. She talked about social events. Her mother remarried, but both parents mostly worked away. She enjoyed school. She went to Bowie State for college when it was a three year normal school. She taught in the Oraville School for $65 per month. During the summer, she worked in restaurants. She had been married twice. Her second marriage was very successful; her children turned out well. She mourned the lack of community and lack of discipline for children. She discussed racial attitudes over the years and other changes in the county. The interview is on three disks and in a black plastic container with a cream label on the spine.
