Description

This is an enlarged copy of an old photograph. It shows a church altar--Mr. Fenwick thinks it may be St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church in Leonardtown, but that is not likely. A few pews are visible in the foreground, then the altar rail, a central altar and two side altars. The sanctuary lamp hangs from the ceiling just to the left of the altar. There are altar cloths on each altar. The altar table is painted? embroidered? with the words Jesus and Mary flanking a central circle enclosing two hearts. There is a tabernacle, a crucifix, mass cards, candlesticks and flowers on the altar. Over the central altar is a very large painting, perhaps of Mary being visited by an angel. On the right edge of the central altar is a small projection that supports the water and the wine for Communion. Over the right door is a portrait of Christ? and over the left door is possibly a portrait of St. Therese. Parallel with these paintings are large dark gothic openings in the wall; there was a statue of Mary in one alcove and a statue of St. Joseph and the Christ child in the other, according to Loretta Norris. Doors flank the central altar, the left one closed and the right one ajar to provide access to the sacristy. There is either clothing or curtains hanging on the edge of the right door. The wall may be stuccoed. ************************************** Note on verso: "St. Aloysius?"
