Villa after 1891Entry/Object ID
1980.001.0015Description
This was the remodeled house for Jesuit scholastics built at St. Inigoes near the site of Webster Field. It was called the Villa. The seminarians used the large house as a summer residence. It was a four story large rectangular structure with a hipped roof, clapboard siding, and dark shutters. There was a two story wrap-around porch on the two visible sides. The building was up on blocks, probably because it was too close to the water to have a basement. The camera was pointed at a corner of the building. On the right side there were five medium sized windows on the third and fourth floors, two larger windows on each side of a porch access door on the second floor and four large windows and a center door on the first floor. On the left side there were six medium sized windows on the third and fourth floors, possibly two windows on each side of a porch access door on the second floor, and a similar situation on the first floor, but the porch obscures those windows. Some of the shutters were closed, but the other windows were wide open. There was very little furniture on the second floor porch. On the first floor porch were many people and chairs. Next to the door on the right was something that looked like a piano or an organ with a case to cover it from the weather. There was lots of music visible. Many young men were reading. There was a millstone leaning against each visible corner of the porch. There may have been vent stacks on the left and right edges of the roof. Beyond the house was a large barn. There was a nearly backless bench in the front yard.
