Villa in 1876Entry/Object ID

This was the first house for Jesuit scholastics built at St. Inigoes near the site of Webster Field. It was called the Villa. The seminarians used the large house as a summer residence. It was a three and a half story large rectangular structure with a gable roof, clapboard siding, six dormers in the roof, and dark shutters. The building was up on blocks, probably because it was too close to the water to have a basement. On the visible gable end there was a small window in the roof peak, a round window with eight lights in a pie shape, another small window under the round one, two medium sized windows on each side of the round one, five medium sized windows on the third floor, five larger windows on the second floor and four large windows and a center door on the first floor. On the visible long side were six gable roofed shuttered dormers up in the roof, six medium sized windows on the third floor, six larger windows on the second floor, one large window, a double door, and four large windows all on the first floor. Attached to the gable end away from the camera was a two story addition that probably had three windows on the second floor and a door and two windows on the first floor. A small raised shed--almost like a rabbit hutch--was just past that addition. Many of the shutters were closed, but the other windows were wide open. The other side of the building looked out over the water. There was only one spindly tree on the right and no other foliage--it was very stark. It certainly looked like a dormitory. It must have been an oven up in the attic.
