Description

The scan of the daybook book has been printed out with a page of explanatory notes and is probably the most legible version of the daybook. It is in the Research center at 975.241 CAM in a black notebook. If using the CD, click on the folder called "Camalier Daybook" and then "scanned images." I entered names I could read, but if I could not, I did not guess. If there was a last name only, I generally did not enter the name. I did not enter the various doctors' names because most of them were called "Doct. blank" with no first name. If I were sure a person was a slave, he is entered under "Slave, name," but if I was uncertain, just the forename is entered. Most of the spellings are entered as found, unless I was absolutely certain I knew better, or the spelling varied within the book. The cover of the daybook was brown and marbled with many colors, but nearly everything has faded away. Text hand written on the front cover: "Old day book of Vincent Camalier architect and builder the father of John A., George, Vincent and Catherine M. Camalier" Many many of the entries were later Xed over, probably to indicate the account was settled. The following page numbers refer to the paper printout; the original did not have consecutive numbers for the pages. Page 1 is dated 1847 and includes a note to the St. Aloysius building committee Page 2 includes a statement by B. Harris Camalier: "My grand-father's, Vincent Camalier's day book found by me in the old store room of the Clerk's office on the 23rd of July 1923." The rest of the page talks about bricks. Page 3 is dated November and December 1846 and lists loads and numbers of bricks hauled Page 4 has only one entry about bricks with the rest of the page empty except for the scrawlings of a child Pages 5 and 6 are dated 1846 reporting the account with Charles Bowlin Page 7 is dated 1847 and concerns Joe Smith Pages 8-11 are a description and measurements of a Mrs. Manning's house. Between pp. 8 & 9 is a small piece of blue paper that may have been part of the report of John Guy, supervisor of the public roads, with lots of figuring in pencil, a rough sketch of a building, and other notes Page 12, dated 1859, has a listing of work done by David Morrow at Ellenborough for B. G. Harris Between pp. 12 & 13 is a small scrap of blue paper with figuring and notes Page 13, 14, and part of 15 dated 1846 is the account of John H. Tucker and Leonard Gadden Page 16-18 dated 1847 says "To his subscription for the building of the Church" and lists particulars of an account with Thomas Morgan Page 19-26 are dated 1857 saying Mr. Camalier commenced work on Jutland for H. G. S. Key. Between pp. 24 & 25 is a small scrap of dull white paper with a Paid stamp with an illegible date that ends in 4 Page 27 & 28 dated 1859 say William Hewitt worked for B. G. Harris Pages 29, 30, and 31 are blank P. 32 has a strip of paper glued on the left edge and is a continuation of the account with H. G. S. Key Page 33-47 dated 1846 and 1847 is the account for the construction of St. Aloysius Church. On p. 47 Mr. Camalier submitted the bill for his services: 330 days at $2 per day. The church cost $3555.50 to build. Page 48-53 dated June 1855, et seq. was the accounting for George C. Morgan's building that finally cost $5302.63 for the "very best." Page 54 & 55 dated 1857 continued the account with H. G. S. Key Page 56, 57, & 58 dated 1859 are the account for the schoolhouse built at the request of J. W. J. Moore, William J. Yates, and John F. Fenwick Page 59 is blank Page 60-63 I think continues the schoolhouse record Page 64-69 focuses on the time worked by Henry.
