3 1/2" x 6" negative of an image of the front elevation of West Hatton in Charles County. The center block was two full stories, an addition on the right was two stories, but not as tall, and the addition on the left was a story and a half. The entire house appeared to be full brick. There were four chimneys on the center block, one on each side of the roof peak. Each addition had a chimney on its roof peak. The house had gable roofs on all its parts. All the windows appeared to be double hung and all had shutters. There were two six over six windows in the left addition, three eight over twelve light windows in the second story of the center block, two twelve over twelve windows on the first floor, plus two barely visible windows below grade level, two six over six windows on the second floor of the right addition, and two six over six windows on the first floor. The entry door was on the left corner of the center block. A stout porch on four pillars had been raised over the door, possibly three or four steps up from the ground. The door had an arched fan window above, narrow lights on each side of the door, and two lights in the door itself. There was a white picket fence in front of the house, with a wide double gate flanked by pillars. The gate was not centered on the house. It appeared to be wide enough for two vehicles to pass side by side through the opening. There were sizable trees around the house; one was very tall and may not have been in good condition. There was an expanse of lawn between the photographer and the fence.
Knight submitted a small sheet of paper with the negative to an unnamed newspaper giving a little history of the house, built by Major William Truman Stoddard and pointing out the house was on the12th annual Maryland House and Garden Tour at the end of April. Sadly, there is no year mentioned, but it may be 1946.
A positive print of the very damaged negative is included.
