2 1/2"h x 1 3/4"w daguerreotype of Archbishop James Whitfield, bishop of Baltimore from 1828-1834. The metal piece was behind a light cardboard "frame" with an oval opening. Seated in a high backed chair, he was wearing a dark cape with many small buttons, a large cross, and two layers of sashes. His dark hair curled onto his face in a Napoleonic style. This is probably a photograph of a portrait rather than a photo from life, because the Archbishop had died before Mr. Daguerre invented his photographic process.

Text on the verso: The daguerreotype was held in place by tightly glued blue lined school paper. On that paper, written in pencil is "Fr. Jenkins," then something, possibly "Bishop" was written and then partially erased. At the bottom of the card, Mr. Fenwick wrote "Bishop Martin John Spalding" in blue ball point pen.
