Name/Title
Wilkinson half pennyEntry/Object ID
2014.018.0006Description
1 1/8" diameter brown coin with "John Wilkinson Iron Master" around the outside edge and a profile of a gentleman with a conservative wig and a decided nose in the center. On the verso is the profile of an iron worker in a toga, wielding a hammer. The top of half of the outer edge says "Half Penny" and the date "1790" is under the feet of the ironworker. The rim is smooth. The coin gives no clue as to the location of the business. The accompanying paragraph by C. W. Edelen notes that many merchants issued such coins and accepted those cast by others if they had faith in that person's business. Mr. Edelen wondered if the iron worker was related to the Maryland Wilkinsons.Collection
