William A. Wallace was married twice. His first wife was Rebecca H. Briscoe of St. Mary's County. The marriage took place in Baltimore on November 14, 1876, witnessed by William A. Glascock and Violet B. Biscoe by J.A. Kern. The text of the certificate was surrounded by elegant Victorian Gothic motifs and floral swags. Clasped hands appeared near the top center. The certificate was produced by M.A. Coudy in St. Louis, Missouri. Either by accident or design, the paper was heavily stained in brown. The other certificate was much larger and had more elaborate engraving. There were chain links on all four sides, with roses and foliage at each corner. At the top it said "Marriage Certificate" and under that was a shell boat, complete with sail, carrying the happy couple across a small lake. Swans pulled the boat and putti guided the swans. "This certifies that William A. Wallace and Jane M. Reeder were by me joined together in Holy Matrimony" with a tasteful oval of a family group witnessing a marriage. The marriage was at home, wherever that was, on October 21, 1890, officiated by E.H. Smith.Collection
