Scope and Content

1 folder ; 9 1/2" x 11 3/4" 5 7/8"h x 3 1/8"w dull yellow paper covered booklet with 22 blue lined sheets of paper inside. The booklet was an advertisement for Baugh & Sons Company in Baltimore that specialized in bones and bone meal and other kinds of fertilizer and soil improvers. The local vendor of the products was George F. Abell in California. I think Dr. Greenwell used this booklet to keep track of patient visits; sometimes he wrote down the treatment provided and whether he received payment. On the top edge of the front cover, he wrote "Med. Relief," so the record may be for a certain group of patients on a government program. Most of the entries are nearly impossible to read. 5 1/2" x 3 1/4" dull gold paper covered booklet of ca. 50 pages, but some have been cut away. It was an advertisement for Dr. Pierce's pleasant pellets that would cure every type of ailment. Many pages in the booklet were devoted to descriptions of ailments and testimonials to the efficacy of the medicine, with small drawings of each writer. The cover had, in black ink, "Pierce's Memorandum and Account Book [a triptych of two workers and a farmer] designed for Farmers, Mechanics AND ALL PEOPLE who appreciate the value of keeping a memorandum of business transactions, daily events, and items of interest or importance, for future reference A present from the World's Dispensary Medical Association Buffalo, N.Y. and London, Eng. Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1900, by the World's Dispensary Medical Association in the office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington." On the back cover was a drawing of the Association's building in Buffalo and a description of Dr. Pierce's all-healing salve. On the top of twelve early pages was a calendar for 1902. The ten lined pages seem to be an inventory of an unnamed household, perhaps taken for an estate. The next page after the list has been removed, but it did have text; it is too bad its gone.
