Dr. Thomas Gerard came to Maryland in 1637 with his wife and 5 children. The couple had 5 more children in this country. He practiced medicine, was an innovative farmer, and was politically active. He broke with Lord Baltimore, eventually moved to the Virginia side of the river and died there in 1673.
