Irvington Wharf on Carter' Creek. Middlesex at Irvington Wharf. Steamboat shown after the addition of extra staterooms on the upper deck.
Both landings, such as this one at Irvington on the Rappahannock River, were to be found all around Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries in the days before the truck and bus, when transportation was by water. The steamer shown is the Middlesex, and she was operated by the Maryland and Delaware and Virginia Railway Co. This photograph is from the collection of The Mariner's Museum.
