Description

Covered bowl having a hemispherical bowl on a pedestal foot molded with basket work and floral sprays on the exterior and a pierced, domed cover with molded floral sprays and intertwined ring-shaped knob, painted in underglaze blue with highlights on the molded flowers on the bowl and cover, a cell border at the inner rim of the bowl and outer rim of the cover, and five circular medallions containing chinoiserie scenes with buildings and trees in the well of the bowl. The form is known today as a chestnut basket, but this is probably a nineteenth-century collector’s term. A similar covered bowl with a pierced cover made of creamware was illustrated in the 1798 catalog Whitehead catalog, where it was described as a “Large Cream Bowl, with Stand pierced, and Ladle” (Haggar, James and Charles Whitehead Manufacturers Hanley Staffordshire (date unknown), 5) Similar pieces are in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, accession numbers 414:49/&A-1885 and 414:443/ to B-1885. Another similar basket is dated August 1762 (Godden, Godden’s Guide to English Blue and White Porcelain (2004), 193)
