Description

Three color slip-decorated red earthenware dish with flat bottom. Slip applied in alternating colors of white, black, and green slip with trail from the rim of the dish and flow to the center base creating a marbled appearance. The rim is folded over to the back creating a rim profile. Manufactured in Philadelphia; possible by Hillegas as noted by similar vessels found in excavations on Bread Street in Philadelphia. See George Cress, Michael and George Peter Hillegas: German Immigrant Potters and Prosperity in Colonial Philadelphia; Master's Thesis, 2000. Previous identified as Moravian manufacture based on similarities with bowls found at Bethabara, North Carolina. This example pre-dates the Moravian settlement in PA or NC.
