Description

Cylindrical mug having straight sides, and unglazed bottom, and an intertwined strap handle with foliate terminals, painted in overglaze famille rose enamels with scattered flowers on a gold ground over the surface of the mug with a circular medallion opposite the handle containing a landscape scene painted in sepia (brown) enamels. A similar mug but with the coat of arms of the Stocker or Tatum family instead of the landscape scene is dated circa 1810 (Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain Volume II, p. 669). The intertwined strap handle is based on handles found on contemporary European porcelain and creamware.
