Ointment pot having a compressed, bulbous body, flared rim, and spreading footContext
This ointment pot could have held any variety of salves, creams, waxes, or poultices. Ointment pots varied in size, and were used to hold and dispense sticky or semi-liquid products sold by apothecaries, grocers, and perfumers. They could have also been filled at home with homemade recipes and remedies. The flared rim enables the use of a piece of cloth, secured with a string, to protect the often animal fat-based contents from bugs and vermin.Collection
