Description

Circular plate with no foot ring, painted in blue with a scroll and stylized floral border at the rim and a large flower in the center of the well. It has also been suggested that this plate could have been made in France.

Context

The importation of painted earthenwares into England was banned in 1672, and further restrictions called for the destruction of any foreign-made blue and white earthenware like this plate to be destroyed. As a result, European tin-glazed earthenwares were prevented from reaching the American colonies until the embargo on British goods in 1775. However, french ceramics ultimately could not compete with the whiter, more refined creamwares from British potteries. This plate may have arrived at Stenton despite the English ban on foreign blue and white delftwares through James Logan's connections to trade and ship captains who had access to European goods.
