Tea Bowl

Description

Tea bowl with straight, slanted sides standing on a foot ring and painted in underglaze blue with a leafy banana plant, scholar’s rocks, and fence around the exterior.

Context

This tea bowl is among the smallest excavated at Stenton. These small tea bowls likely represent the earliest teawares found in Feature 14. Teawares dating from earlier in the eighteenth-century tend to be smaller than those found later on, as tea was more expensive and thus more precious to and savored by consumers.
