Scope and Content

January 8, 1930 - In 1930 there were several committees: community service, publicity, emergency, and membership. Meetings were first Wed. each month at 7:30 except during the summer when it was on Tuesdays. Jack Airey was the first president. It was first called the Stinson Beach Improvement Club. Original money for the club came from the recently defunct "Marin of the Sea Society" $63.00. At the end of the first meeting, all retired to Algar's restaurant for refreshments. At the second meeting, January 16, the name was changed to The Progressive Club of Stinson Beach. They discussed a road to the beach from Calle del Mar. The first bill of the club was from Jack Airey for lunch and cigars. They discussed roads with Bolinas and Muir Beach spokes person. And a proposed Coast Road. The Boundaries of Stinson Beach were described as Stinson Ranch, Ocean, and White Gate Ranch. Mr. Fitzhenry furnished a place near the Ranch for a dump. They then discussed a road to the dump and $ for the dump. Then they discussed a masked party at Sea Downs. They then began discussing advertising for tourism in the Redwood Empire and San Francisco papers. Stinson Beach where the mountains meet the sea. 3 miles of beautiful sandy beach for surf bathing. Marvelous scenic trails for hiking. Surf and Lagoon fishing. Temperate climate with all the year around resorts. Homesites with wonderful mountain and ocean views. Only 15 miles by motor from San Francisco. Stages Daily. In May it was decided to erect signs giving names of streets. It was also decided that Ladies have charge of social events. July 2 a discussion with Mr. Fitzhenry about the easement to the beach through Upton Camp property. Mr. Fitzhenry talked with the members about efforts to have Willow Camp and his beach property made a State Park. He did this because of greater numbers of picnickers now that closed motor cars were coming so frequently. Sept. 3 there was talk of a "defunct seal" on the beach. They decided to communicate with other clubs and chambers of commerce about improving the coast roads. Road work was suggested for Calle del Mar (the main road) On Oct. 21, 1930 they endorsed the Golden Gate Bridge Project. There was also talk of dredging the channel into Bolinas Lagoon. In Nov. Mr. Gardner, our supervisor, said that Panoramic Highway would be bituminized by June of the next year. There was some controversy over that as some wanted the coast road improved first.
