Scope and Content

Now that the government is interested, Route 1 is going to be kept open and repaired. The Listening Post for Civil Defense was placed in the library. Fund drive for the Red Cross. By March there was a laxness reported at the Listening Post. The issues of conserving tires was raised. Commuters were encouraged to use the Stage Day time periods of Listening Post were abandoned. Need to buy Defense stamps and bonds. Concern over what to do with rubbish now that outdoor fires are illegal. Sign up for sugar rationing. Statement about encouraging tourists to come to the coast for Memorial Day. There will be no closings as long as trips are planned so as to conform with desires of the military. No night driving along coastal roads. Herb Caen was broadcasting this information. There was a discussion of gas masks but none are yet available. There is a drive for scrap rubber. Firecrackers were prohibited this year. The army was in quarters here. They were over the real estate office of Mrs. Grunert and served as a clubroom for the soldieres of the Coast Artillery. The issues of the war seemed to have died down by Oct. of 1942
