Description

Squire's Hall as seen in 1950 rebuilt on the site of Cline's Feed Store and Dean Building. Burned down May 16/1925 Lightning struck the wiring at the back of the hall. The Spectator reported at the time that a "old fashioned bucket brigade "saved the core of downtown Stoney Creek business. Originally built in 1892 by Roland Squire. At different times this housed the Women's Institute(1897). In October of 1910 the building was sold and turned into the feed and grain store by Christopher Walker. A shoe repair store run by John Greenway and a tobacco store run by William Hoffman. Sold in 1913 and bought by Richard C Gower and Frank Cline purchased in the same year and operated The Cline Feed store for 17 years in this location. Cline rebuilt the structure on the original foundations and operated it is a feed store for an additional 5 years. It was vacant for a number of years until purchased by Saltfleet Township in 1941 and utilized as store house and shed for town maintenance. It later housed the Saltfleet Township offices.
