This item is an original U.S. Supreme court opinion from the Dred Scott case. The case was argued before the court in the December term of 1856. The document belonged to Captain Leander Dwight Kee. The donor is pretty sure that Leander carried this manuscript with him during his time in the service and wrote his opinions and comments in the margins of the pages Having been an attorney, he would have read it cover to cover, making notes, arguing the case. Leander and his cousin Ephraim had a firm commitment to the cause of abolition and fought for that cause during the Civil War.
