Description

Framed sign is a list of rules for the Viking Club (presumably the Independent Order of Vikings). It reads " Uphold the prestige and dignity of the Viking Club | Observe these house rules! 1. Closing time for Saturday Parties will be at 3:00 AM. 2. Club members must carry their membership cards at all times. 3. Only members shall possess keys to the Club. 4. No intoxicating drinks will be served to minors or to persons already intoxicated. 5. Members will be responsible for the conduct of their guests. 6. By-laws of the Viking Club will be enforced at all times. 7. Coats and hats must be checked before entering club rooms. | The Sergeant-at-Arms is authorized to enforce these house rules at all times."

Context

Established in 1891 to provide a community for Swedish working-class men in Chicago, the Independent Order of Vikings offered members health insurance, promoted self-improvement, and celebrated Swedish culture and Norse mythology. In 1904, Swedish-American women began their own Order, which they disbanded when women were allowed full membership in the original order in 1933. Today, the Independent Order of Vikings still has lodges across the U.S. celebrating Scandinavian heritage and culture.
