Carl Billy “Swede” Sandelius
March 21st, 1930 - March 11th, 2019
Sandelius was born in Gröndal, Stockholm, Sweden in 1930. He first came over to Andersonville in 1949, when he was only 19 years old. He stayed with an uncle, also from Sweden, and learned English at Lakeview High School. During the Korean War, he enlisted in the US Army and was granted citizenship. He was then stationed in France, where many of the soldiers frequented a café in a small Lorraine town. It was here he met a waitress, his future wife, Evelyne. A few years after the war, the couple got married in 1957 and moved back to Stockholm. However, Andersonville became their permanent home in 1963. A bricklayer by trade, Sandelius attended The Famous Artists School, a mail in art course program. He made several oil paintings over the 60’s and 70’s, taking reference from post cards and even created master copies. In 2015, he created his last painting, a scene of Evelyne standing in front of the café they met at many years ago. That same year, many of his works were in an exhibition at the Swedish American Museum. Sandelius lived on the same Andersonville block until his passing in March of 2019, with his house now occupied by his grandchildren.Acquisition
