Immanuel Lutheran Church was founded in 1853 in Swede Town, Chicago. In 1918, the church moved north to the Edgewater neighborhood, where it is still open today. The first Swedish school in Chicago was organized by Immanuel Church in Swede Town. The church hosted hvardagsskolan (weekday school) for kids aged 8 or younger. Sunday schools, youth programs, and Swedish language classes taught religious values and Swedish heritage to American-born Swedish children.Acquisition
