Context

The Independent Order of Good Templars was established in Chicago in the late 19th century as a chapter of the International Order of Good Templars (IOGT, today known as the International Organization of Good Templars) founded in 1879 by Olof Bergström in Sweden. The IOGT promoted temperance (abstaining from drinking) and self-improvement and supported workers’ rights. In 1887, people of all races and genders were welcome to join. Their youth lodges mentored teens in the same principles.
