Lithograph print entitled "Kongsøya, Spitzbergen'" by Gunnar Brusewitz. The scene is likely depicting the Norwegian Island of Kongsøya north of the Arctic Circle. It shows a brown and black hill on snow-covered land, a gray and white sky, and an area of the Arctic Ocean with reflections of the hill. A large black seal, seagulls, two of which are flying, and blue ice, and white snow can be seen in the ocean. Numbered 181/200. A lithograph is a work traced on stone, zinc, or aluminum and transferred to paper by a special printing process.

Context

Gunnar Brusewitz was born in 1924 in Ekerö, Sweden. Brusewitz was a documentary artist, a journalist, a stamp designer, a writer, and an illustrator. He studied at the University of Stockholm, and held an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy. Brusewitz was very famous for his paintings of nature and scenery in Sweden, the United States, and many other places as well. He traveled around the world, often in search of nature. He worked mostly with drawings, lithographs, and watercolors. He became very popular as an artist and had work shared in exhibitions around the world. Brusewitz passed away in 2004 in Lisinge, Sweden. Scenes of tranquil nature characterize his work; he is remembered as a popular artist and writer.
